Improving Information Systems

How New Software Is Giving End-Users
More Control of Documents, and
How That Can Radically Improve Your
Organization's Information Management

    Released Jan 26, 2004

The core of this paper was originally written by Nicholas Carroll as an analysis for Searcher: The Magazine For Database Professionals, a magazine distributed to archivists, librarians, database managers, and others involved in electronic document management and retrieval.

It is a practical overview of the bottlenecks being created by information overload (and misinformation overload), examining how increased human intervention in software structures by both data managers and end-users can not only increase the performance of EDM systems, but actually cut costs of managing information.

We have received continued requests for copies of the original article. However, that was written for information professionals, not decision-makers in organizations (whether IT or executives). As a result, we have rewritten the original article and added footnotes; added a list of major EDM software suppliers; and added a solid chapter addressed to decision-makers now buying documentation software. This gives the reader two views, the first from the insider's point of view, and a second dealing with the decision points in setting up information management systems, along with an overview of the better-known EDM systems on the market.

For a sample of previous Hastings reports see the Wireless Usability Report 2001-02 PDF, free download.

(Please note that this report is not a roundup like the wireless report: it is an overview, giving a fundamental understanding of EDM systems, with the basics of "how to implement". We plan on releasing a much more extensive roundup of EDM software in late Spring 2004, which will include comparisons of numerous content management packages including Alchemy, Documentum, LaserFiche, Legato, OnBase, PaperVision, Sire, and others. If you would like to be notified of the release, please send a blank email to edm-04@hastingsresearch.com, and you'll receive a one-time notice with link.)
